Sevilla House

An elongated, windowless basement that had accumulated decades of darkness. The project does not seek remedies: it opens up the building. A void in the existing floor slab connects the interior to the upper-level courtyard and allows light to stream down to the deepest level of the home. An operation based on an elementary concept and demanding execution—structural reinforcement, new metalwork, a courtyard-garden serving as a filter between the domestic space and the sky—that completely reorganizes the logic of the space. The home unfolds over two levels connected by a metal staircase with wooden steps. Downstairs, the daytime living areas—the living room, dining room, and kitchen—now receive overhead light that shifts from one end of the space to the other throughout the day. Upstairs, the bedrooms and a library overlook the double-height void. The materials do not compete with one another: white walls, microcement floors and bathroom finishes, and oak for the woodwork and steps. An austere design language whose sole ambition is not to stand between the resident and the light. The owners bring in their own objects—designer furniture alongside heirlooms, paintings, sculptures, and books—and the home absorbs them effortlessly. It is not a showroom. It is a place with a memory of its own.
